DTT Checklist For Moving House

DTT Essential Moving House Guide

1. Organise Your Precious & Delicate Items

You should do these separately to ensure they are not obliterated during the packing process or the drive to the new house.

2. Other Items That Need To Be Treated With Care

If you have a flatscreen TV it is best you try and use the box it came in to move it. If that is not possible then double box it or transport it with you away from possible falling boxes.

3. Artwork & Framed Pictures

Some removal companies will have special boxes for this. If not, for any framed pictures, use masking tape to make an ‘X’ on the whole front, this will ensure if it breaks that the pieces won’t go everywhere. Then wrap them in bubble wrap and use a piece of cardboard between each picture to stop them hitting each other.

4. Dishes, Cups & Glasses

The best way to pack these in boxes is to use wrap packing paper around each one and then group them into fives or sixes and wrap again with packing paper. Ideally these should then be packed into dish-barrels boxes.

5. Get The Right Box Sizes & Be Sure They Are Strong

Contrary to popular belief, it is better to have more small boxes than a few large boxes filled to the brim with heavy items. Save your large boxes for large but lighter items, or large items that can not be broken down. Your removal person will thank you.

Also be sure to have more than enough packing materials, you don’t want to run out and suddenly need to hunt down more boxes or bubble wrap.

6. Same Room = Same Set of Boxes

Try to keep items from the same room in the same group of boxes, it always makes it easier when unpacking.

7. No Gaps!

Avoid having gaps in your boxes when packing, try and use bubble wrap, packing paper or newspaper to fill the gaps in the box so that nothing can move about. Another trick is to use your towels and blankets to wrap items in if you’re running low on packing materials.

8. Label All Your Boxes

Make sure you label them with the room they need to go in and whether they are fragile so the movers know to be extra careful. It will also help when unloading as the movers will know which room the box should be going into.

9. Notebook (optional but helpful)

You can also keep a small notebook to jot down any precious items and the box they are in. You can also do this with items you might need immediately when you get to the new house.

10. Stack Smart

As a general rule, heavier items in the bottom of the box, lighter items sit in the top of the box.

If you are packing the van yourself, load in the heavy boxes first, putting them at the front, giving your van better balance.

Also be sure not to put heavy boxes on top of light boxes or delicate items.
